What Are Custom-made Foot Orthotics?
Custom-made Foot Orthotics are devices that are inserted into your footwear to optimize the alignment and function of the lower extremity. These devices are made by taking a mold of your feet, and using this mold to fabricate an orthotic that conforms to the individual contours of your feet. In the creation of the device, accommodations can be made for atypical anatomy or to alleviate pain from conditions such as Morton’s Neuroma, plantar fasciitis, or to correct sub-optimal alignment and movement patterns.
Orthotics vary in their design and composition, depending on the intended use (running, prolonged standing, dancing) and the patient’s feet (high arch, diabetes, etc.). They can be made from a variety of materials that range from soft and flexible materials, like cork and foam, to semi-rigid plastics, and completely rigid materials such as carbon-fibre.
Orthotics are used to treat a wide variety of conditions, ranging from foot and ankle disorders, to knee, hip, leg length discrepancies and even lower back problems.
Most extended health plans cover a portion of the cost of custom-made foot orthotics.
